Half of every payment goes to people who learn all day. The ledger.

When you pay for a membership or dedicate a page, half of it goes to yeshivot and study halls in Israel, to people whose whole day is this text. The other half keeps the app running. Both halves are published, every month, with names. This page is where that happens, and right now it says zero, because we haven't taken a shekel yet. We wanted the page to exist before the money did.

The ledger

Updated on the first of every month. Recipients are listed by name as soon as the first transfer is made. Until there is a registered charity behind this, it is a service with a public commitment, and we call it that rather than a donation.

Why yeshivot, and why half

Because the reason this text is still readable, two thousand years on, is that in every generation some people did nothing else. Whatever you think about anything else, that is the unbroken supply chain of the thing you are reading, and it runs on other people's money. Half, because we wanted a number that could not be quietly adjusted, and because a person paying for an app should know that the argument they had with themselves about whether to pay was also an argument about whether someone in Bnei Brak or Jerusalem gets to keep learning.

Dedicate a page

Any page can be dedicated, for the memory of someone or for someone's recovery, on a Hebrew date, and the dedication appears on that page for everyone who opens it that day. That page's video is minted as part of the dedication, so a page explained for one man's father stays explained for everyone after. Dedication $18, a whole day's daf in your name $180, a whole tractate $1,800. Half of each, the same as everything else.

What the other half pays for, and what we won't sell

Explaining the daily page at three levels in two languages with a narrator costs a few dollars a day. The assistant costs a fraction of a cent a question. The free tier is paid for by memberships and, in the free tier only, by an ad between pages. But not any ad. No dating, no gambling, no loans, no alcohol, no astrology, no missionaries, no games, no apps that want you looking at them instead of the page. We keep an allowlist, not a blocklist, and it is short: books, education, hardware, jobs, telecoms, home, charity. A sponsor who wants "today's daf is brought to you by" gets a person's approval, not an auction.
